Hannah Caprice (née Mohammed)
I am a Canadian-Australian emerging artist with Indo-Trinidadian and Slavic heritage. My work delves into the intricacies of hybrid identity, belonging and the search for intimacy. As a cross-cultural kid, I notice a strange beauty in being an adaptable misfit: belonging everywhere and nowhere; feeling fragmented and whole all at once. I’m interested in the nuanced experiences of outliers, focusing on how emotional intimacy with others can mitigate feelings of alienation and enrich our sense of self.
The subjects in my work often express a yearning to belong and connect with others, but also to belong to themselves. While the search for intimacy is the dominant thread in my work, other themes incidentally emerge: the need for tenderness and compassion; concern for our environment; and the importance of play in our daily lives.
Constructed primarily through collage, the subjects in my work represent more than the sum of their parts, embodying a spirit that resonates with our shared humanity. Their varied expressions—ranging from shyness and melancholy to curiosity and peace—mirror our own emotional landscapes during moments of deep connection. To be fully oneself with another is to be home - a place we all deserve to be.
